Daily Press Newspaper
The Daily Press is a local newspaper that covers the Victor Valley Region, which includes more than seven cities such as Victorville, Hesperia, Adelanto, Apple Valley, Phelan, Wrightwood and Barstow. I worked there as an intern during the summer of 2018 and as freelancer after that.
I wrote several front page features, news articles, and pubic safety press releases. On top of that, I gained experience editing pieces, taking photos and interviewing countless sources for a number of different stories. Here’s a look at the work I produced for them.
From rags to Chef’s whites
The journey that saw Basil Kimbrew go from being a hungry homeless veteran to the chef who cooks for them was long and arduous. After a spell in prison and a bout with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), few people expected him to turn things around.
Yet, that is exactly what he has done by becoming a respected chef and winning a prestigious cooking medal, and the victory could not taste any sweeter.
Chain reaction
When Victorville resident Mauricio Reyes Valdes needed a routine physical for his job, he never could have guessed that it would ultimately land him in the middle of an eight-person kidney transplant chain.
That was back in 2009, and a lot has happened to Valdes since then. The physical revealed problems in his urine, so a specialist was recommended to him. After a blood test, the doctors told Valdes that his kidneys were deteriorating.
“It was both kidneys,” Valdes said. “The right one was working at 5 percent while the left one was working at 23 percent during that time.”
“Cooking with bo”
VICTORVILLE — For local youth worker Kenneth Cobb, creating a cookbook was more than just a long-term project: It was was a form of therapy that enabled him to share a vital message about food, health and life.
Cobb is releasing his first cookbook, “Cooking with Bo: Unique, Delicious, Plant Based Meals,” on Sunday. However, this is not just an average cookbook. Cobb is a vegetarian who loves finding uncommon ways of combining healthy ingredients with plant-based foods to create knockout dishes …
Cobb’s love for cooking was kindled when his mother made him and his siblings help her in the kitchen.
“One stop shop”
VICTORVILLE — The Adelanto Elementary School District brought the community together in support of nearly 500 local students in need of supplies for the coming school year.
